Discover hidden gems less than two hours from the city
Valencia is a fantastic city to live in — trust me, I made the move myself — but one of the best things about living here is how easy it is to explore everything beyond it. Whether you’re craving nature, history, charming coastal towns, or authentic Spanish gastronomy, the region around Valencia has it all.
Here are 6 of my favorite day trips, all less than two hours away, perfect for a weekend escape or a spontaneous getaway. If you’re planning to relocate to Valencia, or already living here as an expat, these places are must-visits.
Jávea – Mediterranean Charm and Magical Views
If you love crystal-clear waters and dramatic cliffs, Jávea (or Xàbia) is a dream come true. My favorite spot? Cala Granadella — a stunning bay that’s perfect for snorkeling. After a swim, head up to Cap de la Nau lighthouse for breathtaking views over the Mediterranean.
The old town is full of narrow, whitewashed streets with cozy cafés and artisan shops. In the evening, I always recommend grabbing a cocktail in the marina as the sun sets. It’s pure magic.
Xàtiva – Castles, Legends, and Hidden History
Looking for a bit of history and something truly off the beaten path? Xàtiva blew me away the first time I visited. Its hilltop castle stretches across a mountain ridge, offering epic views and a deep dive into Valencia’s medieval past.
Wander the old town’s quiet streets and discover the story of the “bad pope” born here. It’s a peaceful, authentic town — perfect for culture lovers and those seeking a slower pace.
Huerto Ribera – Citrus Tours in the Orange Valley
If you’ve ever wondered where all those famous Valencian oranges come from, Huerto Ribera is the place to find out. Just an hour from the city, this family-run estate sits in the heart of the Ribera del Xúquer, surrounded by fragrant orange groves.
I took the citrus tour with friends and was surprised by how much I learned — and yes, you get to taste the freshest orange juice of your life. It’s great for kids, foodies, or anyone who wants a unique local experience.
Utiel-Requena Wine Region – Valencia’s Hidden Wine Paradise
Wine lovers, this one’s for you. The Utiel-Requena region is known for the Bobal grape, and its wine-making tradition goes back centuries. I joined a small-group tour that included wine tastings at boutique bodegas, plus a long, relaxed lunch among the vineyards.
Many of the wineries offer tours in English — or even Dutch — making it super accessible for expats living in Valencia. It’s a full sensory experience that I highly recommend.
Montejos – Tranquility in the Mountains
For a peaceful escape into nature, Montejos (also called Montanejos) is one of my top picks. This tiny mountain village is surrounded by hiking trails and natural hot springs. The vibe is quiet and authentic — no tourist crowds, just fresh air and real Spanish village life.
After a morning hike, I like to stop at one of the local restaurants for a hearty lunch and a glass of wine. It’s one of those places that helps you reset completely.
Dénia – Culinary Delights and Coastal Adventures
Dénia is more than just a beach destination — it’s a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. The food scene is absolutely top-notch (don’t leave without trying the famous red prawns), and the town itself is charming and full of character.
The castle in the center offers lovely views over the coast, and the harbor is perfect for a stroll. If you’re feeling adventurous, hop on the ferry to Ibiza for a spontaneous island escape. Yes, really — it’s that close.
